Reclaiming the Al-Cazaba
Andalusia, Spain · Documented 2025
A conceptual proposal to revitalise a layered Islamic fortress complex as a hub for interfaith and cultural exchange.
Dimension 10 of 10
What has been built before — typologies, styles and precedents.
Editorial summary Awaiting the founder’s approval
The architectural dimension concerns the discipline’s own knowledge: typologies, styles and precedents (Reza 2025). It asks how earlier buildings solved comparable problems, and how their lessons can be carried forward without imitation.
The founder’s 2023 essay gives an example: the transitional semi-open spaces with which earlier buildings mitigated a hot, humid climate can be reinterpreted through sun-shading louvres, jalis and buffers (Reza 2023b). The 2025 essay cites the Sultanate mosque in Bengal, with its curved cornice derived from bamboo construction, as an example of successful synthesis between imported typologies and local building traditions (Reza 2025).

Precedent carries knowledge forward; hybrid forms record encounters between building traditions. Example drawn from Reza 2025.
Climate shapes form: semi-open transitional spaces, louvres and jalis temper heat and humidity. Example drawn from Reza 2023b.
Material properties set the limits and possibilities of form, from terracotta to contemporary engineering. Example drawn from Reza 2025.
Beliefs and rituals inform spatial organisation; in one thesis, non-dualism shaped interwoven courts. Example drawn from Reza and Nitu 2025.
Every building becomes part of an existing fabric; typology mediates between the building and the city. Example drawn from Reza and Nitu 2025.
