New contextualism: A path to a sustainable and equitable future
Mohammad Habib Reza
The Business Standard 19 December 2023
Abstract
The essay defines New Contextualism as a forward-thinking philosophy for built environments informed by predictions of the future, rooted in the past and grounded in a holistic understanding of context, with an emphasis on equity and justice.
It traces the approach to the author’s early work as an architect-planner for the Barisal City Corporation and to his doctoral research on the early Buddhist architecture of Bengal, and positions it in relation to contextualism and critical regionalism. It describes context as extending from universal values through regional ideas to the immediate neighbourhood and site, and introduces the ‘tenfold overlapping study’ of social, economic, political, historical, ecological, scientific, geographical, cultural, urban and architectural facets used in the author’s design studios.
The author biography notes that the essay summarises a forthcoming article for a book dedicated to the philosophy.
