Editorial summary Awaiting the founder’s approval

The historical dimension reads place as an accumulation of layers of development, memory and significance (Reza 2025). New Contextualism treats history as foundational knowledge rather than an optional pursuit: it illuminates how societies evolved, the successes and failures of earlier interventions, and the long-term consequences of design decisions (Reza 2025).

History is also the basis of anticipation. The founder argues that the past provides ‘the essential data set’ on which meaningful prediction can be built (Reza 2025). At the same time the approach rejects ‘a retreat into uncritical nostalgia’ (Reza 2025): the task is to reinterpret the past intelligently, not to mimic old architectural styles (Reza 2023b).

Historical in relation

Interpretation Relations proposed by the editors

  • 01 Social

Collective memory binds communities to places; losing a place can mean losing part of a shared origin. Example drawn from Reza 2025.

  • 03 Political

Policy and patronage decide which histories are preserved, and which are allowed to disappear.

  • 06 Scientific and Technological

Prediction depends on history: data and models are only as good as our understanding of past patterns. Example drawn from Reza 2025.

  • 07 Geographical

Settlement patterns shaped by water and terrain persist across centuries, as the delta's earthen embankments show. Example drawn from Reza 2025.

  • 08 Cultural

Memory and ritual accumulate as layers of meaning; routes between temple and settlement can become the skeleton of new design. Example drawn from Reza and Nitu 2025.

  • 09 Urban

Urban fabrics are palimpsests: an old market can hold dense habitation, informal commerce and heritage structures at once. Example drawn from Reza 2025.

  • 10 Architectural

Precedent carries knowledge forward; hybrid forms record encounters between building traditions. Example drawn from Reza 2025.
